firstly we define pH
pH :
pH is defined as the negtive log of the hydrogen ion concentration expressed in mol/L
formula of pH is :

pH = -log [ H₃O]⁺
now we come our question :
A negtive logarithmic scale is used because the numbers are all less than 1, and vary over a wide range. sice the pH is the negtive logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration, low pH numbers e.g
pH 6.2 indicate relatively high hydrogen ion concentration ( An Acidic Solution) .
High pH number e.g
pH 7.8:
pH 7.8 indicate lower hydrogen ion concentration ( Basic Solution ) .
pH and pOH:
As we know that pH is the negtive logarithm of molarity of H .
pH = -log [ H⁺]
pOH:
pOH is the negtive logarithm of molarity of OH⁻
pOH = -log [ OH⁻]
pKw:
pKw is the negtive logarithm of constant water.
pKw = -log [Kw ]
Properties of pH Scale:
➨ pH scale provide us provide us a means of comparing relative concentration of hydroxide and hydronium ions.
➨ The scale ranges from 0 to 14
➨ A pH of zero is very acidic and a pH of 14 is very basic .
➨ A pH of 7 is neutral . there is equal number of hydroxide and hydronium ions.
